Over 300 delegates, including top scientists and government officials, concluded a three-day national conference at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today, issuing a firm call to policymakers for urgent action on soil and water conservation to ensure India's ecological and agricultural future.

The event, titled “Land and Water Management for Ecological Restoration and Agricultural Sustainability,” was hosted by the Department of Soil and Water Engineering at PAU, addressing the critical challenges of soil erosion and water scarcity through in-depth discussions. PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, who chaired the concluding panel, reiterated the need for immediate adoption of crop diversification and rigorous groundwater conservation strategies across the country.

Dr. Gosal praised the comprehensive deliberations, emphasizing innovative, practical solutions necessary to combat resource degradation. He specifically highlighted methods such as rainwater harvesting, widespread implementation of micro-irrigation techniques, and the development of climate-resilient crops as vital tools for agricultural resilience. The conference successfully enabled participants to outline key takeaways and action steps for moving forward with nationwide soil conservation efforts.

The technical sessions, summarized by Organizing Secretary Dr. Manmohanjit Singh, included a highly praised panel discussion on the “Rehabilitation of Flood-Affected Soils,” which provided practical strategies for nutrient restoration and erosion control in damaged areas. Dr. Singh also expressed gratitude for the strong collaborations fostered across different states and institutions during the event.

Guests of honour, including Dr. Rishi Pal Singh, Registrar of PAU, and Dr. TBS Rajput, President of the Soil Conservation Society of India (SCSI), New Delhi, hailed the conference for focusing on the latest technological advances and operational tools in the field. Dr. Sanjay Arora, Senior Vice-President of SCSI, used the occasion to highlight various awards instituted by the society to recognize outstanding contributions in land and water management.

The successful event also saw the release of three key publications by the dignitaries: the Compendium of Abstracts, the Souvenir of the Conference, and the book, “Advanced Approaches for Climate Resilient Water Resource Management,” penned by Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Dr. Sanjay Arora, and Dr. TBS Rajput. Dr. Shamsher Singh, former Additional Commissioner, Government of India, offered a vote of thanks, appreciating the valuable contributions of all speakers, delegates, and volunteers who ensured the smooth conduct of the conference.
