Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (Chandigarh–Jammu & Kashmir) IRS officer Amanjit Singh called upon youth to actively support the anti-drug movement and promote the government’s MANAS helpline 1933 during a special awareness programme held at the Swadeshi Fair at Punjab Agricultural University on Friday.

The programme, organised at the Kisan Ground of PAU, focused on disaster management and drug de-addiction awareness. Civil Defence Director G.S. Bhatia conducted the session, which drew large participation from youth, volunteers, representatives of social organisations and visitors attending the fair.

Amanjit Singh attended the event as the chief guest. Fair patron Harish Dua and fair head Sardar Gurdeep Singh Gosha welcomed him with a bouquet and a memento. Several dignitaries present at the event appreciated the initiative and described such awareness drives as essential for society.

The Civil Defence team educated participants about how to respond effectively during natural disasters, fire incidents, earthquakes, accidents and other emergencies. Volunteers demonstrated first aid techniques, emergency response methods and basic rescue operations. They encouraged young people to contribute to disaster management efforts through community service.

Addressing the gathering, Amanjit Singh highlighted the growing threat of drug abuse in the country and stressed that citizens, especially youth, must take responsibility in combating the menace. He informed the audience that the Government of India launched the MANAS (Madak Padarth Nishedh Suchna Kendra) helpline 1933 on July 18, 2024, as a secure and citizen-centric platform. He explained that the helpline allows individuals to confidentially report drug trafficking, illegal cultivation of narcotic substances and related crimes, enabling law enforcement agencies to act promptly.

He urged young people to spread awareness against drugs and actively support the campaign to build a drug-free nation. He emphasized that collective efforts from society can significantly reduce the impact of drug abuse.

On the occasion, Gurdeep Singh Gosha, Harish Dua and Vinay Ji resolved to widely promote the MANAS helpline 1933 and strengthen efforts toward a drug-free India. Fair press secretary Keemti Rawal, who has been associated with anti-drug initiatives for nearly two decades, described the campaign as highly commendable.

At the conclusion of the programme, attendees pledged to adopt and disseminate the knowledge shared on disaster management and anti-drug awareness. Several prominent personalities, including advocates, social workers and professionals, were present at the event.
