Acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) has identified 47 unauthorized commercial establishments constructed along the connecting road from Ferozepur Road (NH-95A) to Ladhowal (NH-44) and directed the violators to demolish the illegal structures immediately or face sealing and demolition without further notice.
The action follows Civil Writ Petition (PIL) No. 85 of 2024 filed by Ludhiana Citizen Council and others, seeking a writ of mandamus to restrain authorities from allowing encroachments and illegal constructions along NH-95A from Village Barewal to Village Ayali and to remove ongoing violations.
In response to the court proceedings, GLADA’s field staff conducted a detailed ground survey along both sides of the canal near South City on the stretch connecting NH-95A with NH-44. During the inspection, officials documented 47 unauthorized commercial establishments operating along the road.
Officials said that 25 applications related to 21 establishments were submitted under the government policy dated August 21, 2013 for regularization certificates. After examining the cases and completing the legal process, GLADA rejected all the applications.
In addition, four applications concerning three establishments were received under the policy dated October 18, 2018. Authorities have now cancelled the regularization certificates earlier issued for one plot and two buildings after following due legal procedure.
GLADA has already filed a detailed status report before the High Court outlining the survey findings and the action taken.
The authority has now asked all violators to remove the illegal constructions at their own cost without delay. If they fail to comply, GLADA will proceed to seal and demolish the structures under the provisions of the Punjab Regional and Town Planning and Development Act, 1995, and recover the entire demolition cost from the concerned parties in accordance with law.
