The legendary "Rural Olympics" will reclaim its most iconic tradition this year as bullock cart races officially return to the tracks of Kila Raipur from January 30 to February 1, ending a twelve-year legal hiatus.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain announced the three-day sporting extravaganza today during a press conference at Bachat Bhawan. He confirmed that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has finalized all arrangements for the event, with the Chief Minister himself scheduled to attend the festivities.
The resumption of the bullock cart races follows the recent passage of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Act, which provides a legal framework for the traditional sport. To ensure the safety of the animals, the district administration has formed a high-powered committee to strictly enforce guidelines set by the Animal Welfare Board of India and the state government.
The sports festival kicks off on January 30 with an opening ceremony featuring Giddha, Bhangra, and martial arts displays by Nihang Singhs. The first day’s competitive lineup includes hockey matches for both boys and girls, 1500m and 400m finals, and the initial heats of the bullock cart races starting at 12:15 PM.
Saturday’s schedule intensifies with semi-finals in hockey, Circle Style Kabaddi, and field events like Shot Put and Long Jump. Bullock cart racing will take center stage twice on the second day, with dedicated slots at noon and again at 4:00 PM to accommodate the massive crowds expected from across the region.
The grand finale on February 1 will showcase the grit of veteran athletes in the 100m races for seniors aged 65 to 80, alongside unique rural feats like trolley loading and unloading. The ultimate winners of the bullock cart races will be decided during the final sessions starting at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Deputy Commissioner Jain emphasized that the state government is committed to identifying and nurturing local talent through this platform. He noted that the Rural Olympics serves as a vital bridge to Punjab’s sporting heritage, helping to steer the youth toward a healthy lifestyle and away from social evils.
Organizers from the Kila Raipur Sports Society (Patti Suhavia), including President Colonel Surinder Singh Grewal, expressed immense gratitude for the government's support in reviving the races. They have invited sports enthusiasts globally to witness the event, which remains one of the largest gatherings of rural athleticism in the world.
Participants from the bullock cart unions of Majha, Doaba, and Malwa must submit their entries by 2:00 PM on January 29 to be eligible for the competition. The event will also feature nightly performances by renowned Punjabi singers to entertain the thousands of visitors arriving in Ludhiana.
