Punjab Jail Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh on Friday inspected the Central Jail and Women’s Jail in Ludhiana, where he reviewed facilities, cleanliness, food quality, and rehabilitation measures for inmates.

During the visit, he checked barracks, high-security zones, the kitchen, factory units, and workshops including carpentry, welding, power loom, weaving, tailoring, and bakery. He also examined the CCTV control room, PCO, recreational facilities, and computer lab while taking stock of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses aimed at skill development of prisoners.

He tasted food in the jail kitchen to assess its quality and interacted with inmates, listening to their grievances and appreciating cultural activities such as songs performed by prisoners. At the jail hospital, he reviewed OPD services, HIV ART, TB treatment, and counseling programs, where doctors demanded a portable X-ray machine, cell counter, and lab analyzer.

Addressing inmates through Radio Ujala Punjab, he encouraged them to actively participate in education, work, and sports to support their reformation.

At the Women’s Jail, Dr. Singh inspected food services, healthcare, the legal aid clinic, library, barracks, and vocational units. He interacted with women inmates about their health, food quality, and legal cases, and informed them about free legal aid through the District Legal Services Authority. At the hospital, he directed authorities to forward a request for an additional doctor to the Civil Surgeon to ensure 24-hour medical care.

He also met children staying with women inmates and distributed stationery kits to support their education.

Speaking after the inspection, Dr. Singh said previous governments had failed to transform prisons into reform centers, allowing criminal influence to grow. He added that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government is working to improve infrastructure, curb illegal mobile phone use, and strengthen CCTV surveillance to turn jails into true reform institutions.

Earlier, the Minister received a guard of honour from a Punjab Police contingent on his arrival.
