Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party government’s decision to convene a Special Session on April 13 to bring a new law against sacrilege was an attempt to cover up its failure to punish those responsible in sacrilege-related cases despite being in power for four years.

Warring described the proposed Special Session as “yet another theatrical presentation” by the AAP government and questioned why, according to him, it had failed to ensure punishment for those responsible for sacrilege incidents and the subsequent police firing in which protesters were killed.

He said that, in his view, if the state government had been serious about enacting such a law, it should first have held consultations with stakeholders, scholars and legal experts, given the emotional and long-term significance of the issue for Punjab.

The Punjab Congress chief further alleged that there was an “open understanding” between the AAP and the Shiromani Akali Dal, with what he described as BJP patronage. He questioned why, according to him, no action had been taken against those allegedly responsible even after Sukhbir Singh Badal’s appearance before the Akal Takht.

Warring also referred to statements he said were made by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, claiming that those guilty in sacrilege cases would be punished within 24 hours. He said that four years had passed, but, according to him, the accused were still moving freely.

He further argued that merely passing a new law would not create deterrence unless it was followed by actual punishment. In this context, he also claimed that Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, whom he described as AAP’s “poster boy” against sacrilege, had been sidelined within the party.

Taking aim at the BJP as well, Warring questioned why the Centre had not notified the anti-sacrilege law passed unanimously by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 2016. He also asked why the Punjab government had, in his view, failed to pursue the matter with the Centre over the past several years.

Warring alleged that just as the Akali government had brought a similar law in 2016 near the end of its tenure, the AAP government was now doing the same only months before the end of its own term in Punjab.
