Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora on Monday directed officials to speed up work on major National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects in Ludhiana, while ordering immediate action on pending land handovers, compensation payments, drainage issues and commuter safety concerns.

Chairing a high-level review meeting, Arora asked the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Raikot-cum-Competent Authority (Land Acquisition) to hand over the acquired land for the Ludhiana–Bathinda–Raikot Highway to NHAI without delay. He also instructed officials to release pending payments to affected landowners at the earliest.

The Minister similarly directed the District Revenue Officer-cum-Competent Authority (Land Acquisition) to clear outstanding compensation dues under the Southern Bypass project and ensure that the remaining land is transferred to NHAI on priority.

Arora said the three major NHAI projects — Ludhiana-Bathinda, Southern Bypass and Ludhiana-Ropar — involve an investment of over ₹1,904 crore and will together function as a ring road for Ludhiana. He said the projects would improve traffic movement around the city and strengthen road connectivity to the upcoming Halwara Airport.

During the meeting, the Minister also reviewed civic and infrastructure bottlenecks linked to the projects. He directed the NHAI Project Director and Municipal Corporation officials to prepare a detailed estimate to resolve the long-pending drainage problem at Sherpur Chowk and ensure proper rainwater disposal before the rainy season.

To improve road safety, Arora asked NHAI to make proper lighting arrangements on the South City bridge. He also called for the beautification of existing bridges, installation of clear signboards, and safety measures such as rumblers and cat eyes to reduce the chances of high-speed accidents.

The Minister further instructed officials to identify and rectify black spots on major roads across the district to prevent accidents and improve commuter safety.

Reviewing pending works linked to Halwara Airport, Arora directed departments to complete all unfinished work on priority and ensure smooth road connectivity for the public.

He also took note of the heavy traffic congestion near Verka Milk Plant on Ferozepur Road and asked the concerned authorities to improve traffic management and find a permanent solution to the rainwater accumulation problem in the underbridge near the plant.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Additional Deputy Commissioner (G), SDM Raikot, District Revenue Officer Ludhiana, Project Director and DM NHAI Ludhiana, Tehsildar Raikot, and other officials.
