Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora on Friday announced a fresh infrastructure and civic development push for Ludhiana, sanctioning a new fire brigade station, a foot over bridge outside the bus stand, roof repairs in vulnerable localities, and multiple urban improvement works during a high-level departmental review meeting in the city.
Chairing the meeting, Arora approved the setting up of a new fire brigade station at Lodhi Road, a move aimed at strengthening emergency response services in an area that had long awaited such a facility. He also sanctioned a ramp-equipped Foot Over Bridge (FOB) outside the bus stand to improve pedestrian safety and ease movement, with a provision for two-wheelers as well.
The minister also cleared ₹2 crore for roof repairs in Jawahar Camp and Haibowal, while approving ₹1.25 crore for development works in three city schools. The decisions came as part of a broader review of civic infrastructure and public service delivery in Ludhiana.
Arora directed the Municipal Corporation to complete sewer de-silting across the city within two months so that drainage systems are prepared before the onset of the monsoon. He reviewed the condition of major city entry points, including Ferozepur Road, Jalandhar Bypass, Chandigarh Road, and Delhi Road, and pushed departments to speed up visible improvements.
As part of traffic and urban redesign measures, he announced the redevelopment of 22 chowks and work on traffic lights at five intersections. He also said tenders would soon be floated for the repair of the Jagraon Bridge wall and the upgradation of the Verka under-bridge. In another move to tackle waterlogging, officials were told to install pump motors in the Dholewal and Grand Walk areas.
During the review, officials also briefed the minister on the progress of 43 road repair works, Aam Aadmi Clinics, and six parks being developed or upgraded in different parts of the city.
Arora also asked GLADA and the Irrigation Department to prepare a proposal for a nearly 3-kilometre bypass linking Chandigarh Road to Delhi GT Road. The proposed bypass is expected to divert heavy commercial traffic away from congested stretches such as Jamalpur, Sector 32, and Samrala Chowk, which frequently witness traffic pressure.
Apart from infrastructure, the minister addressed public concern over fuel availability and clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders for household consumers in Punjab or Ludhiana. He urged residents not to panic or resort to bulk booking and warned that anyone found hoarding LPG cylinders, petrol, or diesel would face strict legal action.
He, however, acknowledged a temporary shortfall in commercial LPG supply and said hospitals and hostels were receiving priority. He added that families organising weddings and requiring commercial cylinders could approach the district administration, which has been asked to make special arrangements in such cases.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr. Neeru Katyal Gupta, and senior officials from several departments.
