Punjab’s political temperature rose sharply on Sunday as opposition parties announced a joint gherao of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Chandigarh, demanding strict action in the warehousing official death case. The protest follows the alleged suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, who reportedly accused former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of harassment before his death, sparking outrage across the state.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, while addressing the media, strongly criticised the state government and said the case reflects “a complete failure of governance.” He asserted that merely accepting Bhullar’s resignation is not justice and demanded his immediate arrest. Majithia alleged that the government is trying to shield the accused and warned that the opposition will not remain silent until strict action is taken. He also emphasised that the victim’s family deserves justice and accountability must be fixed at the highest level.
Backing the protest, leaders like Sunil Jakhar and Partap Singh Bajwa joined hands with the SAD, marking a rare show of unity. The opposition collectively demanded a CBI probe into the matter, alleging political pressure in the ongoing investigation. As security tightened in Chandigarh, police detained several leaders attempting to march toward the CM’s residence, even as the issue continues to intensify into a major political flashpoint in Punjab.
