Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday declared that the holy city of Amritsar will soon house a world-class international cricket stadium, a move designed to elevate the state’s sports profile and provide local youth with elite training facilities.

The Chief Minister shared this vision during a public address in Chandigarh on March 16, 2026, where he outlined the Aam Aadmi Party government’s achievements over the past four years. He emphasized that the Punjab government is committed to transforming the state into a global sports hub by investing heavily in high-performance infrastructure.

The project addresses a long-standing demand for a modern cricketing venue in the Majha region. By constructing a stadium that meets global standards, the government aims to bring Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and International Cricket Council (ICC) fixtures to Amritsar, which currently relies on the aging Gandhi Ground for local matches.

The administration plans to integrate the latest technology into the stadium’s design, ensuring it features advanced drainage systems, high-capacity seating, and professional-grade floodlights. This initiative is part of a broader "Politics of Work" agenda that focuses on tangible development projects rather than mere policy announcements.

Beyond cricket, the Chief Minister revealed that the state is actively bidding to host the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup. He noted that while Amritsar will focus on cricket, Jalandhar and Mohali will continue to serve as the primary venues for international hockey, creating a diverse sporting corridor across Punjab.

To ensure the project benefits grassroots athletes, the government intends to establish a sports academy within the stadium complex. This facility will offer professional coaching and modern equipment to young cricketers from across the border belt, helping them transition from local talent to national-level competitors.

The state sports department has already begun the process of identifying suitable land on the outskirts of the city to ensure easy accessibility for fans and players. Officials believe that the proximity to the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport will make Amritsar an ideal host for visiting international teams and sports tourists.
