Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday called upon girls to become active partners in Punjab’s socio-economic development, asserting that the state cannot become a front-runner in the country without the equal participation of women in governance, economy and politics.

Addressing a state-level International Women’s Day function at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, the Chief Minister said the Punjab government has been actively removing barriers that prevented women from entering key sectors and leadership roles. He said the state has already provided more than 63,000 government jobs purely on merit and noted that a majority of these positions have been secured by girls.

Mann said the government has also appointed several women officers as Deputy Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police and Additional Deputy Commissioners, adding that women administrators are performing their duties with dedication and competence. He pointed out that districts headed by women Deputy Commissioners have recorded lower female foeticide rates and have taken strong action against various social evils.

Encouraging young women to participate in politics, Mann said democracy will become stronger when women take part in policy making and leadership. He noted that girls have already outnumbered boys in many professional fields but politics still remains largely dominated by men. He urged women to come forward, participate actively in the democratic process and exercise their voting rights responsibly.

The Chief Minister also announced that Punjab will soon induct women into the state’s Fire Fighting Services after removing certain unrealistic eligibility conditions that had earlier prevented girls from joining the department. He said Punjab will become the only state in the country to have girls serving in fire fighting services following the relaxation of these rules.

Highlighting Punjab’s legacy, Mann said the state has always been known for courage, resilience and enterprise. Referring to historical role models such as Mai Bhago and Durga Bhabhi, he urged girls to draw inspiration from their contributions to society and the nation.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister felicitated several women achievers, including girls who recently cleared the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Cabinet Minister Baljeet Kaur and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
