Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Sunday described melas as the “soul of Punjab” while addressing visitors on the ninth day of the Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela 2026 in Khanna, saying such gatherings reflect the vibrant spirit, traditions, and unity of the state.
Speaking at the ongoing fair, Sond said melas are not merely commercial events but social platforms that bring together music, dance, food, and cultural traditions, helping people reconnect with their roots. He added that Punjab’s sacred soil has always promoted harmony, brotherhood, and love, and urged citizens to guide the younger generation away from drugs, violence, and negativity by channelising their energy towards nation-building.
Highlighting the economic impact of the event, the minister said the mela is generating employment opportunities and creating sustainable livelihoods, particularly for women. He pointed out that women entrepreneurs earlier struggled with marketing and customer outreach, but the Punjab government is now supporting them by providing free stalls, promotional support, proper infrastructure, and direct access to buyers.
Sond also termed the Sakhi Shakti Mela a milestone in spreading awareness about women’s rights, strengthening self-reliance, and ensuring social respect for women across the state.
The fair continued to draw record-breaking crowds on its ninth day. A special star night added to the celebrations as popular Punjabi singer R. Nait captivated the audience with a high-energy performance, further boosting the festive atmosphere.
