The Punjab Vidhan Sabha Committee for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Backward Classes (BC) today ordered Ludhiana police to resolve all pending complaints from these communities within 15 days. Chairperson Sarvjit Kaur Manuke issued the strict directive during a high-level review meeting at the District Administrative Complex, where she emphasized that the police must submit a comprehensive progress report to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh immediately following the deadline.
The committee, chaired by Manuke and attended by several MLAs, evaluated the grassroots implementation of various state and central welfare schemes. The panel instructed district officers to maximize publicity and organize special awareness camps to ensure that no eligible beneficiary remains excluded from government facilities due to lack of information.
During the session, the committee specifically addressed the hardships faced by persons with special abilities. Manuke suggested that the government provide dedicated ambulances to transport these individuals to hospitals for treatment, proposing that ASHA workers take the lead in identifying and assisting those in need to reduce the physical and financial burden on their families.
Addressing legal concerns, the committee reviewed atrocity cases under the SC Act with the Ludhiana Police Commissioner and the SSP (Rural). While police officials reported that FIRs have been registered and challans presented in most instances, the committee set a firm 15-day window for the completion of any remaining investigations to ensure swift justice for the victims.
The Chairperson also highlighted administrative gaps in the disbursement of relief funds and scholarships, noting that address discrepancies often prevent payments from reaching the intended recipients. To resolve this, administration officials assured the committee that they would implement a new system to deliver grants directly to the homes of beneficiaries in the coming weeks.
Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain and Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma welcomed the committee members, while Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rakesh Kumar pledged that the district administration would implement every instruction in letter and spirit to uplift the downtrodden sections of society.
