Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri ignited a massive community movement on Sunday morning by flagging off the inaugural Pro Run at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The 5-km run serves as the official curtain-raiser for the Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh National Marathon, which is set to take place on March 22, 2026, in Mahilpur, Hoshiarpur.
More than 1,200 participants gathered at the PAU campus at 6:30 am to participate in the event, which honors the legacy of Shaheed Bhagat Singh while addressing the modern-day crisis of narcotics. Joining the Deputy Speaker were MLAs Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Manwinder Singh Giaspura, and Ashok Parashar Pappi, alongside PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal.
The Deputy Speaker characterized the initiative as a "decisive battle" under the state’s 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign. He stated that the marathon transcends traditional sports by blending patriotism with a physical fight against drug abuse. Rouri emphasized that the Punjab Government remains committed to eradicating the drug menace and ensuring that traffickers face the full force of justice.
To provide the state's youth with constructive alternatives to drugs, Rouri announced that the government is developing 3,100 rural sports grounds. These facilities aim to channel youth energy toward healthy lifestyles and competitive sports, creating a sustainable infrastructure for physical fitness across the state’s villages.
The event concluded with a passionate appeal from the Deputy Speaker for citizens from all walks of life to join the main marathon in March. He urged students, families, and senior citizens to participate in large numbers to show a united front against substance abuse and to pay tribute to India’s freedom fighters through action and endurance.
