The Punjab government on Friday launched a historic health insurance scheme under which every family in the state can avail up to ₹10 lakh in cashless treatment at government and empanelled private hospitals in Punjab and Chandigarh.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Mann inaugurated the scheme, called the Mukhyamantri Health Insurance Yojana, marking the largest initiative for health coverage in the state since India’s independence.
The scheme was highlighted by MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu, who said Punjab has become the first state in the country to provide cashless medical treatment of up to ₹10 lakh per family. “Now, no family will have to bear medical expenses from their own pocket, and no needy family will be deprived of healthcare due to financial constraints,” Sidhu told the media.
The launch event was attended virtually and physically by national conveners Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, along with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Mann. Sidhu viewed the launch with his constituency workers at his office through a live screen.
The program will cover every individual in Punjab, across all income groups, religions, and castes. The government has also ensured that local hospitals in every city will be part of the scheme so that patients do not have to travel long distances for treatment.
Sidhu emphasized that the scheme reflects the Chief Minister’s commitment to understanding the needs and hardships of common people, offering equitable health benefits to all residents of Punjab.
