Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu announced the launch of the ‘Gangsters te Vaar’ campaign on Tuesday, signaling a massive statewide crackdown to eliminate organized crime in Punjab. Following the government’s intensive "War Against Drugs," this new initiative aims to dismantle gangster networks and end the culture of political patronage that shielded criminals in the past.
MLA Sidhu detailed the campaign's objectives during a press conference, emphasizing that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration remains committed to making Punjab a crime-free state. He issued a stern ultimatum to all anti-social elements, warning them to either leave the state immediately or prepare to face imprisonment and police action.
The legislator contrasted the current government’s proactive stance with that of previous administrations, which he accused of promoting gangsterism for political gain. He noted that the Punjab Police now operates with a free hand, conducting daily operations and encounters to ensure the safety of the public and maintain communal harmony.
Highlighting the success of the prior "War Against Drugs," Sidhu shared that the police have registered 32,000 FIRs against drug smugglers and incarcerated thousands of criminals over the last 325 days. He credited this campaign with not only removing traffickers from the streets but also rehabilitating addicted youth through new 100-bed de-addiction centers.
To support the current anti-gangster offensive, the state has also launched "Operation Prahar," a 72-hour massive strike involving 12,000 police personnel. This operation specifically targets the associates of 60 foreign-based gangsters, further tightening the noose around those attempting to disrupt the peace from abroad.
The government has also established a dedicated anti-gangster helpline, 93946-93946, to encourage citizens to report criminal activities anonymously. Sidhu reiterated that no individual disrupting the harmony of Punjab will be spared under the current regime's zero-tolerance policy.
