Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has demanded that Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav register a criminal case against Patiala SSP Varun Sharma for allegedly directing police officers to illegally detain opposition candidates during the Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections.

Badal said the SSP held a conference call with district police officials and instructed them to stop opposition candidates from filing their nomination papers either by detaining them at home, blocking them in route, or by influencing Returning Officers to reject their documents. He alleged that the SSP acted as a “stooge” of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), violating his oath and undermining the Constitution.

The SAD chief asserted that anyone protecting Varun Sharma would become a “co-conspirator” and face consequences. He said the party would file a formal application against the SSP and approach the courts to ensure legal action and imprisonment as per law.

Badal claimed that the AAP government misused the police force after realising it was heading for defeat in the polls. He added that the alleged misuse was not limited to Patiala and that police officers across Punjab were taking “guidance” from AAP legislators to prevent opposition nominations.

He urged SAD workers to contest the elections with full strength to deliver a decisive victory. He also welcomed former Zila Parishad chairman Parminder Singh Rangian into the party, saying his return would strengthen the party in Gill and Dakha constituencies.
