Panic gripped parts of Chandigarh on Monday after a bomb threat email warning of multiple explosions, including at the Regional Passport Office in Industrial Area Phase-2, prompted an immediate evacuation and a large-scale security response.

According to reports the threat surfaced early in the day when authorities linked to the Ministry of External Affairs received an email claiming that several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been planted across the city and could detonate around the afternoon. The message specifically mentioned the passport office among key targets, triggering swift action by security agencies.

Acting on the alert, Chandigarh Police, along with bomb disposal squads and dog units, launched extensive search operations at the passport office and other sensitive locations. Officials evacuated staff and visitors as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and prevent panic.

Despite a thorough inspection of the premises, security teams found no suspicious object or explosive material. Authorities later declared the area safe, indicating that the threat was likely a hoax, though investigations are ongoing to trace the sender of the email.

Police have initiated a cyber probe to identify the origin of the threatening message, using technical surveillance and digital forensics to track the source. Officials have urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
