Ikramudin / Ludhiana
At least 10 pilgrims from Ludhiana's Jagraon are said to have died and dozens remain missing after a motorboat capsized in the Yamuna River near Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 2:45 PM when a group of 32 devotees from Ludhiana, who had travelled for a religious pilgrimage, boarded a boat to cross the river after visiting the Banke Bihari Temple.
According to reports, strong winds caused the vessel to lose balance midstream, after which it sped uncontrollably, struck a temporary pontoon bridge and overturned, throwing passengers into the river.
Rescue operations are underway with teams from NDRF and SDRF, along with local divers, searching for those still missing. Authorities have recovered 10 bodies so far, including six women and four men, while several others remain unaccounted for.
Back in Jagraon, grief spread quickly as news of the tragedy reached families. Many victims were part of a larger group of around 150 people travelling in two buses for the pilgrimage.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Ex Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and other leaders have expressed grief over the incident. Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring expressed deep shock over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana Himanshu Jain informed that the district administration and the Punjab government are already in touch with authorities in Vrindavan and have set up 24×7 dedicated control rooms in Ludhiana and Jagraon to assist affected families. He shared helpline numbers 01624223226 (SDM Jagraon office) and 01612403100 (DC office Ludhiana) for public support.
DC added that special teams comprising civil and police officials have been dispatched to Vrindavan for better coordination with local authorities. He also urged residents not to spread rumours or panic and appealed to people to remain united during the crisis.
