The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Monday issued a formal statement to clear the air regarding the death of a BSF Jawa, Jaswinder Singh, who passed away while in the agency's custody for investigation in Amritsar.

Following the incident at a private hospital, the agency released the details of the medical emergency and the ongoing legal inquiries to address the circumstances of the custodial death and ensure transparency regarding the protocols followed.

According to the NCB, Jaswinder Singh, a resident of RS Pura, Jammu, was arrested by its Jammu Unit on March 3, 2026, in connection with a commercial heroin seizure case (Crime No. 26/24). His brother, Pupinder Singh, a habitual offender with six NDPS cases in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, had already been arrested in the same case.

The agency later arrested Jaswinder on March 12 in a separate case involving a commercial quantity of Tramadol, with his custody being extended multiple times until March 23.

According to the NCB, technical analysis of the suspect’s communications revealed that he was in active contact with drug smugglers based in Pakistan, Punjab, and Jammu. Based on this evidence, officials transported him to Amritsar on the evening of March 19 for further field investigation.

Upon arrival in the city, he developed acute chest pain and was immediately admitted to Pulse Hospital for emergency medical care.

According to the NCB, the accused suffered two cardiac events and expired on the morning of March 20 while undergoing treatment at the hospital. In compliance with the protocols prescribed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Supreme Court of India, the agency’s Amritsar unit has requested inquest proceedings by a Judicial Magistrate and a magisterial enquiry by an Executive Magistrate.

According to the NCB, a formal post-mortem examination has been initiated and the NHRC has been informed through the local police.

NCB stated that it is currently awaiting the reports of the enquiry and the post-mortem, emphasizing that all prescribed procedures under the NHRC guidelines are being strictly followed in the matter.
