Nine people were killed and multiple others injured in a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. Police confirmed that the suspected shooter was found dead at the scene. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they received emergency calls reporting an active shooter shortly after 1:20 pm local time. Officers responded and secured the school premises, while residents in the area were advised to remain indoors as a precautionary measure.
Police located several victims inside the school building. Emergency medical teams transported injured individuals to nearby healthcare facilities. Health authorities stated that numerous people were treated, with some reported to be in serious condition. Air ambulances assisted in transferring critically injured patients to larger medical centers.
Investigators later confirmed that additional victims were discovered at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved and said they are coordinating with families before providing further details.
Police said the suspected shooter died from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury. Officials have not disclosed a possible motive. Forensic teams are examining evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and collecting witness statements as part of the investigation. Authorities stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Tumbler Ridge, a community of approximately 2,400 residents, has initiated support measures following the incident. Counseling services and crisis response teams have been made available to students, families, and staff members affected by the shooting.
Government officials and community leaders expressed condolences to the victims’ families. Flags were lowered at several locations, and authorities urged the public to rely on verified information as the investigation continues.
