The Meat Market area of Khanna, once known as a hotspot for drug trafficking, is now emerging as a drug-free model under the Punjab Government’s ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign. The local police and civil administration have significantly curbed drug activities in the area and have shifted their focus toward improving the quality of life for residents.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Darpan Ahluwalia led the initiative on the ground, working in coordination with the administration to bring about change. Punjab Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond had earlier announced the adoption of this area to transform it into a drug-free zone, which accelerated the reform efforts.
As part of the initiative, the administration has started empowering local women by connecting them with self-employment opportunities. SSP Dr. Ahluwalia and SDM Swati Tiwana distributed sewing machines to more than a dozen women to help them earn a livelihood and strengthen their families economically. The authorities will also provide free stitching training in the coming days to further enhance their skills.
The administration has also ensured the enrollment of children from the area into schools and is encouraging youth to participate in sports and other constructive activities to keep them away from drugs. Officials stated that these combined efforts have not only reduced drug-related issues but also brought visible social transformation in the locality.
The police and civil administration said they will continue to strengthen this campaign and aim to replicate the Khanna model in other areas, reinforcing their commitment to building a drug-free society.
