Fire Safety Week Begins in Ludhiana; Mayor Leads Citywide Awareness Drive

Ludhiana Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur kicked off the city’s annual "Fire Safety Week" on Tuesday morning at the fire brigade headquarters near the railway station. Accompanied by MC Commissioner Dr. Neeru Katyal Gupta and other senior officials, the Mayor launched the initiative to educate the public on fire prevention and honor the sacrifices of first responders.
The event commenced with a solemn tribute as the Mayor and firefighters observed a two-minute silence for those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Following the memorial, Mayor Kaur flagged off a massive awareness rally themed "Engage, Educate & Empower People to Enhance Safety." The procession moved through high-traffic zones including Mall Road, Gill Road, and Ferozepur Road to ensure maximum visibility among residents.
Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO) Jaswinder Singh explained that the week-long observance, running from April 14 to April 20, is a nationwide tribute to the victims of the 1944 Victoria Dock explosions in Mumbai. By linking the historical tragedy to modern-day safety, the department seeks to remind citizens of the devastating power of fire and the importance of preparedness.
Throughout the week, the Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade wing will conduct practical training exercises and mock drills at hospitals and other public locations. The civic body has also scheduled blood donation camps and various competitions in local schools to foster a culture of safety among the younger generation.
Addressing the gathering, Mayor Inderjit Kaur urged residents to take personal responsibility for their safety by installing standardized fire-fighting equipment in their homes and businesses. She emphasized that following safety norms is the only way to prevent untoward incidents and protect the city's infrastructure.
