“Delays Intolerable”: ADC Poonam Singh Pushes for Faster Wheat Procurement in Ludhiana

Additional Deputy Commissioner Poonam Singh issued a stern warning to officials on Tuesday, declaring that any further delays in wheat procurement are "unwarranted and intolerable" during her inspection of the Gill Road grain market. Accompanied by District Food and Civil Supplies Controller Sartaj Singh Cheema, Singh moved to streamline operations as the district ramps up its seasonal harvest activities.
The ADC directed the Food and Civil Supplies Department and various procurement agencies to immediately mobilize government machinery to ensure the prompt purchase and lifting of wheat. She emphasized that a foolproof mechanism must remain in place so that farmers do not face any inconvenience while bringing their produce to the mandis.
To ensure these orders are followed, Singh mandated that officials personally visit the grain markets every single day. These daily inspections aim to oversee the ground-level operations and guarantee a seamless, hassle-free experience for the agricultural community across the Ludhiana district.
Current data reveals that 7,685 metric tonnes of wheat arrived in the district’s grain markets as of April 13. The administration has already disbursed payments totaling ₹3.18 crore to farmers, signaling an effort to maintain liquidity and support the local rural economy during the peak harvest window.
Singh also appealed directly to the farmers, urging them to bring only moisture-free grains to the market to speed up the testing and buying process. Furthermore, she issued a firm call to end the practice of burning wheat stubble, highlighting the serious environmental hazards and health risks associated with the smoke.
The district administration reaffirmed its commitment to the farming community, stating that every necessary step is being taken to ensure that the "golden harvest" is procured the moment it arrives in the market. Local officials remained on-site following the ADC’s visit to begin implementing the enhanced monitoring protocols.
