Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, along with Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr. Neeru Katyal Gupta, on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Buddha Dariya rejuvenation project and directed officials to take strict action against dairy units and industrial violators contributing to pollution in the historic water body.
Chairing a review meeting at the MC Zone D office, the leaders focused on one of the major causes of pollution in the Dariya — the dumping of cow dung by dairy units. They directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to identify violators and disconnect electricity supply to dairy units found dumping cow dung into Buddha Dariya.
The meeting was attended by MC Joint Commissioner Vineet Kumar, Joint Commissioner Amanpreet Singh, Councillor Indu Munish Shah, SE Ekjot Singh, officials of PPCB, PSPCL, PEDA, and the contractor engaged for door-to-door lifting of cow dung from dairy complexes.
To strengthen waste management in dairy complexes, officials of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) were instructed to speed up the installation of bio-gas plants in the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes. The move is expected to reduce the direct discharge of cow dung and improve the overall waste disposal system in these areas.
Speaking during the review, MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said that a ‘Seechewal Model’ pond has already been set up in the Haibowal Dairy Complex to stop cow dung from entering the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and to improve the efficiency of the treatment system. He also said that the contractor hired for the lifting of cow dung has started deploying carts in the dairy complexes to streamline the collection process.
The review also addressed industrial pollution. Officials of the PPCB and the Municipal Corporation were asked to keep strict watch on dyeing units and ensure that no untreated industrial waste is discharged into Buddha Dariya or the city’s sewer lines. The officials were also directed to ensure full compliance with the directions issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding pollution control in the dyeing industry.
Appealing to the public, MP Seechewal and Mayor Inderjit Kaur urged residents to support the administration by stopping the dumping of waste into Buddha Dariya, which they described as a water body of religious and historical importance. They said that the rejuvenation of the Dariya would not be possible without active public participation.
Earlier, MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal had also inspected the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes and issued necessary directions to the concerned officials.
