Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on Monday directed officials to ensure foolproof arrangements in all grain markets across Ludhiana district for the smooth and timely procurement of wheat during the ongoing harvest season.
Chairing a review meeting at Bachat Bhawan, Jain said the administration would ensure that farmers, labourers and commission agents do not face any inconvenience during procurement operations. He reiterated that the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, remains committed to procuring every single grain brought by farmers.
The district administration expects around 8,16,473 metric tonnes of wheat to arrive in 109 mandis this season, making logistics and coordination a top priority for the authorities.
Jain asked officials to ensure proper cleanliness, drinking water and seating arrangements at all grain markets so that farmers visiting mandis receive basic facilities without difficulty.
He also directed procurement agencies, including Markfed, Food Corporation of India (FCI), PUNGRAIN, PUNSUP, Warehousing Corporation, Punjab Mandi Board and the Food and Civil Supplies Department, to maintain an adequate stock of gunny bags and other essential materials required for procurement.
The Deputy Commissioner further instructed all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to closely monitor procurement activities in their respective areas and take immediate corrective action wherever shortcomings are found.
This year’s wheat procurement drive is expected to be a major exercise for the district administration, with officials focusing on preparedness to avoid delays and ensure smooth handling of arrivals at mandis.
