In a significant step to support migrant workers and check reverse migration, the Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the district administration, has launched a facility to provide 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder connections and refills through selected ration depots in the district.

The initiative aims to make cooking fuel easily accessible to migrant labourers working in Ludhiana so that they do not have to depend on distant LPG distributors for basic household needs.

Under the scheme, migrant workers can obtain a new 5 kg FTL LPG connection by showing only a valid identity card, with no additional documents required at the time of application.

Officials said the service has been rolled out in the first phase at six Fair Price Shops (ration depots) located in different parts of the city to ensure convenience for workers residing in labour-dense localities.

The authorised depots include Rajwinder Kaur at Satwanter Nagar, Tibba Road; Sham Lal at Durga Colony, Dhandari Khurd; Aksheydeep Lamba at Namdev Colony, Jagirpur; Pavinder Singh on Main Road, Barewal; Jaswinder Kaur at Kartar Chowk, New Janta Nagar; and Baljinder Singh at Gobind Nagar, Shimla Puri.

The department said it will expand the facility to more ration depots across Ludhiana district in the coming phases depending on demand and logistical feasibility.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said the district administration and the Food Supply Department are working proactively to ensure that migrant workers get a regular supply of cooking fuel without inconvenience.

He said the administration wants to remove everyday hardships faced by workers and create conditions that encourage them to continue living and working in Ludhiana, where they play an important role in industrial and economic activity.

The Department of Food Supply also warned that it will continue taking strict action against unauthorised LPG handling, illegal refilling and misuse of domestic cylinders.

Officials urged eligible workers to avail themselves of the facility only through authorised depots and follow the prescribed safety norms.
