Seechewal, Mayor Inderjit Kaur Call for Strict Action Against Buddha Dariya Polluters

Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Ludhiana Mayor Inderjit Kaur on Friday called for strict action against those dumping cow dung and untreated industrial waste into the Buddha Dariya while reviewing the progress of the rejuvenation project during a meeting at the Municipal Corporation Zone D office.

During the meeting, the leaders, along with Municipal Corporation Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta, directed officials to intensify enforcement against violators and ensure accountability of departments responsible for implementing the project. Seechewal said officials who fail to act against polluters should also be held responsible.

Officials discussed the functioning of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), along with arrangements for lifting cow dung from dairy complexes to prevent it from entering the river.

Authorities informed the meeting that contracts for lifting cow dung from dairy complexes have already been allotted, and action would now be taken against dairy owners who continue to dump waste into the Buddha Dariya. Officials from Punjab State Power Corporation Limited said FIRs have been registered against more than 30 dairy owners in the past and fines exceeding ₹18 lakh have been imposed for power theft.

Seechewal also directed officials to intensify the drive against dairy owners dumping waste into the river and asked enforcement agencies to maintain strict vigilance.

The MP and the mayor further instructed officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board and the civic body to take stern action against industries discharging untreated effluents into the Buddha Dariya.

Reiterating the commitment of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to build a “Rangla Punjab,” they said the government is not against industries or businesses but will not allow anyone to pollute water bodies, urging collective efforts to protect them for future generations.
