The Ludhiana Bus Stand has become Punjab’s first disability-friendly bus terminal after the district administration introduced several accessibility features to assist persons with disabilities.

The initiative was undertaken by the Ludhiana district administration in collaboration with Act Humane NGO under Project UMEED (Universal Mobility for Empowerment and Enabling of Persons with Disabilities). The project was led by Act Humane founder Harleen Kaur with the support of Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain.

Officials installed tactile flooring across the terminal and added Braille signages on pillars to help visually impaired passengers navigate the premises independently and locate bus counters and routes.

The administration also introduced disability-friendly washrooms at the bus stand to improve accessibility for travellers with special needs. Authorities said the upgrades will enable persons with disabilities to travel independently instead of relying on assistance.

Chief Governance Officer Ambar Bandopadhyay and District Transformation Intern Navpreet Sidhu also participated in implementing the project.

Harleen Kaur said the initiative draws inspiration from international accessibility standards and aims to implement inclusive provisions already mandated under Indian law.

Encouraged by the success of the project, the district administration now plans to extend similar accessibility features to other public spaces, including the Civil Hospital, to ensure government facilities remain accessible to all citizens.
