Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on Tuesday conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Public Works Department (PWD) road projects in Ludhiana, directing officials to take immediate steps to eliminate accident-prone black spots, remove encroachments from service lanes and improve overall road safety.
Accompanied by officials of the NHAI, PWD and Punjab Road Safety Council member Rahul Verma, Jain inspected key highways and intersections across the district. During the visit, he asked NHAI Project Director Priyanka Meena to urgently prepare a proposal to resolve a hazardous black spot near Ladowal police station on the Jalandhar–Delhi National Highway. Officials said the existing median creates conflicts between traffic moving from Ludhiana to Jalandhar and vehicles entering from the Hambran side, leading to frequent accidents and congestion.
Meena informed the Deputy Commissioner that a strategy would be prepared to widen the four-lane Railway Over Bridge near Hardy World to six lanes and construct a vehicular underpass to ease traffic movement. Until permanent work begins, Jain directed NHAI to install rubber speed breakers to reduce the risk of accidents.
The Deputy Commissioner also ordered the immediate removal of encroachments from service lanes along the Jalandhar-Ludhiana-Delhi highway, saying these obstructions often lead to traffic jams. He assured full administrative support to NHAI for carrying out the eviction drive and asked officials to prepare a plan for developing green belts on vacant land along both sides of the highway.
NHAI officials informed that tenders for a ₹70-crore project to construct cement concrete flooring on service lanes will be floated soon. Work to improve the drainage system along the highway to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season is also expected to begin shortly.
Jain further asked NHAI to prepare a detailed project report for installing concrete crash barriers along the Ludhiana-Ferozepur elevated highway to strengthen road safety. He stressed that all entry and exit points in the district should allow smooth and hassle-free movement of commuters.
During the inspection, Jain also directed the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) and the Irrigation Department to submit a proposal for a nearly 3-kilometre bypass in front of Cycle Valley to directly connect Chandigarh Road with the Delhi GT Road. The proposed bypass would help divert heavy commercial vehicles away from congested city areas such as Jamalpur, Sector 32 and Samrala Chowk. He also reviewed traffic conditions at Kohara Chowk.
Separately, while reviewing the Rahon Road project, the Deputy Commissioner directed the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to immediately shift electricity poles from the stretch so that the PWD can start construction work without delay.
Jain said the district administration remains committed to achieving zero accidents and improving road infrastructure through coordinated and time-bound action among departments.
