Volunteers at the seven-day ‘Yuva Aapda Mitra’ training camp in Ludhiana transitioned from theory to high-stakes action on Wednesday as they mastered fire rescue and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) during intensive field exercises. The third day of the program, organized by the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), focused on equipping first responders with the physical precision required to handle life-threatening emergencies.

A specialized team from the Ludhiana Fire Service led the morning session, conducting live demonstrations that transformed the training ground into a simulated rescue zone. Volunteers operated fire extinguishers, practiced emergency evacuation maneuvers, and deployed specialized equipment to douse controlled flames. The instructors pushed participants to move beyond classroom concepts, ensuring they could handle heavy gear and navigate the heat and smoke of a real fire.

Following the fire drills, Course Director Prof. (Dr.) Jog Singh Bhatia and his expert team supervised a rigorous practical session on CPR. Each volunteer performed repetitive chest compressions and rescue breathing on training mannequins to perfect the rhythm necessary to revive victims of cardiac arrest. Dr. Bhatia emphasized that these manual skills must become second nature, as the first few minutes after a person stops breathing are the most critical for survival.

The MGSIPA coordination team, including Harkirat Singh Arora, Manjot Kaur, and Sukhchain Singh, along with several assistant instructors, facilitated the rotation of drills to ensure every participant received personalized feedback. By prioritizing hands-on experience over lectures, the trainers aimed to build the psychological resilience needed for volunteers to remain calm and effective under the pressure of a real-world disaster.

The training continues through the week, with the facilitators stressing that the muscle memory developed during these sessions will serve as the backbone of Ludhiana’s local emergency response network.
