Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) concluded a specialized three-day training program on Thursday to equip 14 farmers from the Kashmir Division with modern sheep and goat farming techniques.
The intensive workshop, funded by the Sheep Husbandry Department of Kashmir, brought together trainees from various districts of the valley to transition from traditional practices to scientific livestock management.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. J.P.S. Gill emphasized the university's role as a regional hub for Northern India, noting that such interstate collaborations create a unique "blend of diverse farming cultures" that benefit the entire agricultural community.
Dr. R. S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, highlighted the rising profitability of the small ruminant sector during the valedictory session. He urged participants to view scientific farming as a sustainable livelihood rather than just a traditional occupation.
Throughout the three-day event, university experts conducted a mix of theoretical lessons and hands-on practicals. These sessions covered essential pillars of the industry, including modern housing design, specialized breeding, nutrition, and rigorous health management.
Course Director Dr. Jaswinder Singh explained that the curriculum also focused heavily on the business side of farming. Farmers learned advanced marketing strategies for meat and milk, along with techniques for "value addition" to increase the market price of their raw produce.
The university, through coordinator Dr. Parteek Singh Dhaliwal, confirmed that it will continue to host similar on-campus and off-campus training programs to support the economic advancement of livestock stakeholders across the region.
