Acting on a complaint, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested a government-aided school principal in Ludhiana district after catching him red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000, officials said on Friday.

The accused, Gurmeet Singh, was posted as Principal at Camp Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Ajitsar Mohi. The bureau took action after a resident of village Mohi alleged that the principal had demanded money to issue his Class 10 matriculation certificate.

The complainant, who passed Class 10 during the COVID period, said he had not received his certificate despite applying online for a duplicate copy. When he approached the school for help, the principal allegedly demanded Rs 15,800 and had already taken Rs 10,000 from him, even though the official fee for a duplicate certificate ranges between Rs 900 and Rs 2,000 under the Tatkal process.

Refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant informed the Vigilance Bureau in Ludhiana. After verifying the allegations, the VB team laid a trap and apprehended the accused while he was accepting Rs 6,000 in the presence of two official witnesses.

The bureau has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at its Ludhiana police station, and further investigation is currently underway.
