The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department in Ranipet (Tamil Nadu) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to facilitate the clearance of a GST registration.
The case came to light after the CBI registered an FIR on April 7 against the accused Superintendent based on a complaint. According to the agency, the official had allegedly demanded ₹30,000 from the complainant in exchange for clearing the GST registration.
During negotiations, the accused Superintendent allegedly agreed to accept ₹15,000 instead of the original amount and asked the complainant to deliver the money on April 7.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught the Superintendent while he was allegedly demanding the bribe amount.
During the trap proceedings, the role of a GST Inspector posted in the same Ranipet Range also surfaced. The CBI alleged that the Inspector tried to destroy evidence by hiding the trap money in a toilet commode and flushing it after spotting the trap team.
However, the investigating team later recovered the bribe amount from the toilet and arrested both officials.
The CBI said further investigation in the case is underway.
