The Punjab Vigilance Bureau apprehended Assistant Sub Inspector Lakhwinder Singh, Incharge of the Kitchlu Nagar police post in Ludhiana, while he was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 on Sunday.

The arrest follows a complaint by a resident of Bank Colony, Noorwala Road, who alleged that the officer demanded illegal gratification to settle a criminal investigation. According to the state Vigilance Bureau spokesperson, ASI Lakhwinder Singh initially demanded Rs 30,000 to ensure the complainant’s mother and sister were not implicated in a pending case.

Seeking justice rather than complying with the demand, the complainant recorded his conversations with the officer as evidence. He subsequently approached the Vigilance Bureau range office in Ludhiana to report the extortion attempt.

Following a preliminary inquiry to verify the claims, a specialized Vigilance Bureau team organized a trap operation. Detectives swooped in and arrested the ASI at the moment he accepted the first installment of Rs 15,000 from the complainant.

The entire operation was conducted in the presence of two official witnesses to ensure the integrity of the evidence. Authorities confirmed that the bribe money was recovered from the officer on the spot.

The Vigilance Bureau police station in Ludhiana has registered a formal case against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials stated that further investigation is currently underway to determine if other individuals were involved in the matter.
