The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA), supported by a heavy police force, on Tuesday surveyed the alleged illegal property of former sarpanch Gurdip Singh Rano as part of the Punjab government’s “Yudh Nashya Virudh” anti-drug campaign, with demolition action likely in the coming days.

GLADA officials reached Rano’s residence in Khanna and carried out detailed measurements of the entire property, including boundary walls, while also documenting the site through photographs. The team will submit its report to senior authorities, who will decide further action.

Officials said the survey was conducted because Rano, accused of running a multi-crore heroin smuggling network, has multiple criminal cases registered against him under the NDPS Act and other serious charges. In 2020, the Special Task Force arrested him with around 31 kg of heroin, exposing a large drug racket.

GLADA Junior Engineer Aman Deep Singh said preliminary findings show that the mansion was constructed without any approved building plan. He added that the family had earlier filed a writ petition to stop demolition, but the court disposed of it on May 9, clearing the way for action under the rules.

A large number of police personnel, led by DSP (Headquarters) Khanna Pritpal Singh Sandhu and other senior officers, remained deployed at the site to maintain law and order during the operation.

Police officials said Rano spent nearly five years in different Punjab jails and was released on bail about four months ago. SSP Khanna Dr. Darpan Ahluwalia said authorities will not spare drug traffickers and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to eliminating the drug menace.
