NDPS Court Awards 10-Year Jail to Fazilka Man in Indo-Pak Heroin Smuggling Case

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured the conviction of a Punjab man in a heroin smuggling case linked to the India–Pakistan International Border, with a court sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a ₹1 lakh fine.
The NDPS Court in Fazilka on March 5, 2026 convicted Vakeel Singh, a resident of Dhandi Qadim village in Fazilka district, for his role in trafficking heroin across the border. The case was investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau, Chandigarh Zonal Unit under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
The case dates back to September 8, 2022, when personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) from the 160 Battalion deployed at BOP N.S. Wala in the Jalalabad sector foiled an attempt to smuggle heroin across the border and recovered 1.790 kg of the narcotic substance.
Following the seizure, the Narcotics Control Bureau registered Crime No. 59/2022 and began an investigation into the smuggling network. Officials arrested Vakeel Singh on September 9, 2022 in connection with the case.
Investigators found that the heroin had allegedly been supplied by a Pakistani national identified as Amar and was kept across the border fence on the Pakistan side before being retrieved.
According to the investigation, the accused drove a Swaraj 855 FE tractor to the border area, retrieved the contraband from across the fence, and concealed it inside the hollow cavity of the tractor’s bumper in two cold drink bottles to avoid detection.
During checking near the border gate, BSF personnel discovered the bottles containing heroin hidden inside the tractor bumper and seized the contraband.
After completing the investigation, the Narcotics Control Bureau filed a complaint before the NDPS Court in Fazilka on March 3, 2023. The court later convicted the accused and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh.
Officials have urged the public to report drug trafficking through the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline (1933), assuring that the identity of informers will remain confidential.
