The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday captured a Nepali citizen in Bihar who had been absconding for twelve years in connection with a high-profile 2014 fake Indian currency case involving a Pakistani national based in Dubai.
Acting on a non-bailable warrant, NIA officials apprehended Noor Mohammed from the PS Shahpur Patori area in Samastipur, Bihar. Mohammed, a resident of the Bara district in Nepal, had been a key target for federal investigators since his name surfaced in a criminal conspiracy to destabilize India’s monetary system.
The case originated in April 2014 when authorities at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi seized 4,988 high-quality counterfeit notes. The fake currency, all in denominations of ₹1,000, carried a total face value of ₹49,88,000 and had been smuggled into India from Dubai on two separate dates in mid-April.
Following the seizure, the NIA registered a formal case in June 2014 under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Investigators subsequently filed a chargesheet against Mohammed in November 2017 at the Special NIA Court at Patiala House, even as he remained at large.
Investigations revealed that Mohammed played a pivotal role in a syndicate led by Pakistani national Syed Muhammad Shafi, also known as Shafi Chacha. Alongside co-accused Ekramul Ansari, Mohammed facilitated critical meetings between smugglers to coordinate the transportation and supply of the counterfeit bills across Indian borders.
Beyond planning, Mohammed closely monitored the logistics of the specific 2014 consignment that led to the initial arrests. The NIA continues to investigate the broader network to identify further links in the procurement and circulation of high-quality fake notes within the country.
