The Punjab Vigilance Bureau apprehended Assistant Sub-Inspector Janak Raj, the incharge of Kailash Chowk police post in Ludhiana, on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
The arrest took place during a sting operation conducted by the Vigilance Bureau (VB) range Ludhiana. The action followed a complaint from a resident of Civil Line, whose brother was recently arrested in a case being investigated by Janak Raj.
According to the official spokesperson of the VB, the complainant alleged that the ASI had already taken Rs 10,000 from him just to allow a meeting with his brother at the police station. Following this, the officer reportedly demanded an additional Rs 2.5 lakh to ensure that the police did not seek further remand for the brother.
Of this total demand, the ASI claimed Rs 2 lakh was meant for the Station House Officer (SHO), while he demanded Rs 50,000 for his own pocket. The complainant managed to record the entire conversation regarding the illegal demand, which served as crucial evidence for the authorities.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau. After conducting a preliminary inquiry to verify the claims, the VB team laid a trap. They caught Janak Raj red-handed as he accepted an initial installment of Rs 15,000 in the presence of two official witnesses.
The Bureau has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB police station in Ludhiana. Investigators are currently looking into the matter further to determine if other officials were involved in the extortion attempt.
