Two Punjab Police personnel died early Sunday morning after sustaining gunshot injuries at a security checkpost in Adiyan village, Gurdaspur. The incident occurred near the high-alert border belt under the jurisdiction of the Dorangla police station.
The deceased have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar. Local authorities discovered the bodies after the personnel failed to respond to multiple phone calls from their superiors during a routine check.
Senior police officers, including Gurdaspur SSP Aditya, rushed to the site immediately to supervise the initial probe. Forensic teams are currently processing the scene to determine the trajectory of the bullets and whether the shots originated from service weapons or an external source.
The checkpost serves as a critical second line of defense near the international border, an area frequently monitored for drone activity and smuggling. Consequently, investigators are examining all possibilities, including a targeted attack by criminals or trans-border elements.
Authorities have shifted the bodies to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Official statements regarding the exact cause of death remain pending as the police await the results of the forensic analysis and ballistics reports.
