Three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on a group of migrant labourers near Khosa Jalal village on the Zira-Moga Road in Punjab’s Moga district on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one worker injured and triggering widespread panic across the region.
The attackers intercepted the labourers, who were walking along the road, and discharged multiple rounds from a firearm before fleeing the scene. One victim, identified as Ashok, a local factory worker originally from Uttar Pradesh, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him out of danger. Another worker escaped with minor graze injuries as the shooters appeared to intentionally target the victims’ lower limbs.
The Moga Police have launched a massive manhunt to identify the shooters, who struck in broad daylight on a busy stretch of the Zira-Moga Road. Investigators recovered several empty shells from the site and are currently scanning CCTV footage from nearby establishments to track the escape route of the motorcycle.
Shortly after the incident, a purported social media post on Instagram by an account linked to "Nirvair Singh" claimed that the Davinder Bambiha gang carried out the attack. The post, which included a video of the firing, identified the shooters as Ladi Bhalwan and Nirvair Singh, framing the violence as a "protest" against migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar residing in Punjab.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Gandhi confirmed that the Moga Sadar police station has registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) and is recording the statements of the survivors.
