Why More Women Are Delaying Pregnancy and What It Means for Fertility ?

As women continue to balance demanding careers, family responsibilities and busy daily schedules, their own health is increasingly being neglected—a trend that could have long-term consequences, according to Jaipur-based gynecologist Dr. Deepika (MBBS, MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology, DNB).
Drawing on her 13 years of clinical experience, Dr. Deepika says she is seeing a growing number of women delaying medical consultations despite experiencing symptoms that may indicate underlying gynecological conditions.
Delayed Consultations Becoming More Common
"Many women remain focused on managing work, family and everyday responsibilities. As a result, they often ignore symptoms they would otherwise seek medical advice for. Unfortunately, some gynecological conditions do not resolve on their own and can become more complicated if treatment is delayed," says Dr. Deepika.
PCOS, Irregular Periods Among Common Concerns
Based on her clinical practice over the past decade, Dr. Deepika says the most frequently diagnosed gynecological conditions include Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), irregular menstrual cycles, vaginal infections, uterine fibroids and infertility-related concerns. She says delayed medical consultation remains one of the recurring issues she encounters among patients.
Symptoms Women Should Not Ignore
Dr. Deepika advises women to seek medical attention if they experience irregular menstrual cycles, heavy menstrual bleeding, severe menstrual cramps, persistent pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge or hormonal symptoms such as acne or unexplained weight gain.
Lifestyle Factors Playing a Growing Role
According to Dr. Deepika, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits and hormonal imbalances are increasingly affecting menstrual health, fertility and overall well-being.
Why Women Delay Treatment
During consultations, Dr. Deepika says the most common reasons women postpone seeking medical care include busy work schedules, family responsibilities, assuming symptoms are normal, fear of discovering a serious illness and lack of time for routine health check-ups.
Early Diagnosis Can Make a Difference
According to Dr. Deepika, many gynecological disorders present early warning signs before complications develop.
"Early diagnosis often allows for simpler and more effective treatment. Women should not wait until symptoms become severe enough to interfere with their daily lives before seeking professional medical advice," she says.
She adds that even symptoms appearing minor should be evaluated if they persist, recur frequently or gradually worsen.
Preventive Care Needs Greater Attention
Despite growing awareness about women's healthcare, preventive gynecological check-ups remain underutilized, Dr. Deepika observes.
"Women spend a significant part of their lives caring for others, but their own health deserves equal attention. Paying attention to symptoms and seeking timely medical guidance can make a meaningful difference to long-term health outcomes," she says.
Dr. Deepika believes increasingly demanding lifestyles make it essential for women to prioritize their own health by recognising symptoms early, scheduling regular gynecological evaluations and seeking professional medical advice whenever concerns arise.
