In a major blow to the narcotics network operating in Punjab, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana Zonal Unit, seized nearly 10 kilograms of heroin valued at around ₹19.90 crore in the illicit market and arrested one person following a dramatic high-speed chase on the outskirts of Ludhiana.

According to an official statement issued by the DRI, the operation was launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotic drugs.

Acting on the information, DRI officers mounted surveillance near the outskirts of Ludhiana and attempted to intercept the suspect vehicle at around 11:00 am on June 12, 2026. However, the occupant allegedly tried to evade apprehension, triggering a high-speed pursuit by the DRI teams.

The vehicle was eventually intercepted and subjected to a thorough search. During the search, officers recovered 18 packets concealed inside a brown backpack kept in the trunk of the car. In addition, Indian currency amounting to ₹1,64,500 was also recovered from the vehicle.

The recovered substance was tested using a field-testing kit and was found to be positive for heroin, commonly known as "chitta". The total weight of the seized contraband was recorded at 9.948 kilograms.

Officials estimated the value of the seized heroin at approximately ₹19.90 crore in the illegal narcotics market.

The DRI subsequently seized the heroin, the vehicle allegedly used for trafficking, the backpack used for concealment, and the recovered cash under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

One person travelling in the vehicle and allegedly carrying the contraband has been arrested under the NDPS Act. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the narcotics and identify other individuals involved in the trafficking network.

The seizure is being viewed as a significant success in the ongoing efforts of central enforcement agencies to curb the flow of narcotic substances into and through Punjab.
