Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is emerging as one of the most common health concerns among young women in India.

According to Dr. Deepika, an AIIMS-trained gynecologist with 13 years of experience at the Deepika Gynae Clinic, there has been a noticeable increase in cases, particularly among women in their late teens and twenties.

“In recent years, I am seeing far more young patients with irregular periods, acne, and weight-related concerns—all pointing toward PCOS,” says Dr. Deepika.

“What’s worrying is that many don’t recognize these as medical symptoms early on.”

Experts believe this rise is closely linked to modern lifestyle changes. Sedentary routines, increased screen time, irregular eating habits, and rising stress levels are significantly impacting hormonal balance in
young women.

“PCOS is not caused by one single factor,” explains Dr. Deepika. “It’s usually a combination of lifestyle patterns and the body’s hormonal response. Today’s fast-paced lifestyle is definitely playing a role.”

Common symptoms include irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and excessive hair growth. However, many women tend to ignore these early warning signs or attempt self-treatment based on online advice.

“One of the biggest mistakes I see is delayed consultation,” she adds. “Many patients try home remedies or diet trends without proper diagnosis, which can worsen the condition.”

While PCOS cannot always be completely cured, it can be effectively managed with the right medical guidance and lifestyle changes. Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in preventing long-term complications.

Dr. Deepika emphasizes a simple message for young women: “Don’t ignore your body’s signals. If your periods are irregular or something feels off, consult a gynecologist early. Timely care can make a significant difference.”
