The cost of obtaining an Indian passport is set to rise from July 1, with the revised fee structure increasing charges for both normal and Tatkaal passport applications.

Under the new rates, the fee for a 36-page passport under the normal application category will increase from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. Applicants opting for the Tatkaal service for a 36-page passport will now have to pay ₹5,000, up from the existing ₹3,500.

The revised charges are expected to apply to fresh passport applications as well as passport re-issues submitted from July 1 onwards.

The fee revision comes at a time when passports have also been at the centre of a wider public discussion following recent observations by India's Ministry of External Affairs that a passport, by itself, cannot be treated as conclusive proof of Indian citizenship. The ministry clarified that while a passport is an internationally recognised travel document issued by the Government of India, questions relating to citizenship are governed by the provisions of the Citizenship Act and relevant legal procedures.

With the increase in passport charges soon taking effect, prospective applicants may have to factor in the higher costs while planning international travel, studies, employment or passport renewals.
