In a commendable example of sustainable agriculture, Dilbagh Singh, a farmer from village Braich in Ludhiana West, has chosen to avoid stubble burning for the fifth consecutive year, instead using in-situ residue management to protect the environment and improve soil fertility.

Singh, who has become a role model for other farmers in the region, has been using a Super Seeder to mix the paddy residue directly into the soil while sowing wheat. This method helps maintain soil health, reduces pollution, and promotes long-term agricultural productivity.

Agriculture Development Officers Dr. Veerpal Kaur and Dr. Karamjit Singh visited his fields on Monday and conducted a live demonstration of the stubble management process. They praised Singh’s efforts, emphasizing that his approach proves sustainable farming can be both practical and profitable.

Dr. Veerpal Kaur said that not burning stubble brings a double benefit—protecting the air from pollution and enriching the soil with organic content, which helps reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Dr. Karamjit Singh urged other farmers to make use of government subsidies available for crop residue management machinery, saying such equipment is now more affordable and accessible.

Fellow farmers in Braich have also joined the movement by collectively clearing stubble from nearly 50 acres and transporting it to a designated site for safe management. They pledged to avoid stubble burning this season and fully support the agriculture department’s clean environment initiative.

Through his consistent efforts, Dilbagh Singh has shown how responsible farming practices can play a crucial role in curbing air pollution while ensuring soil sustainability for future generations.
