In a move to accelerate the resolution of tax disputes, the Government has appointed Harpinderpal Singh Ghotra, Additional Commissioner of State Tax, as the Technical Member (State) for the Punjab and Chandigarh Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).

Harpinderpal Singh Ghotra, a senior official within the Punjab Department of Taxation, will serve a four-year term in this high-profile judicial role. His appointment fills a critical vacancy in the newly established tribunal framework intended to streamline the legal process for businesses and individuals facing tax grievances in the region.

The GSTAT serves as the second level of appeal in the GST regime, acting as a specialized quasi-judicial body. By establishing this bench, the government aims to provide a dedicated forum for contested cases, effectively reducing the burden on the High Courts where taxpayers previously had to seek routine appellate relief.

Industry experts anticipate that this development will significantly benefit the business community by unblocking working capital tied up in prolonged litigation. The tribunal is expected to offer a more structured and quicker route for decisions, particularly in disputes involving high-value tax demands and complex administrative interpretations.

Known for his hands-on and solution-focused approach, Ghotra brings extensive experience in GST administration and field realities to the bench. Colleagues within the department credit his professional track record and disciplined work practices as key factors that will influence how tax justice is administered in Punjab and Chandigarh.

The Punjab and Chandigarh Bench is part of a nationwide rollout of 31 state benches designed to bring uniform dispute redressal to the local level. With Ghotra’s appointment, the bench is poised to begin formal proceedings, offering a more accessible and efficient legal avenue for the regional taxpayer ecosystem.
