Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday asserted that the Congress is fully united and gearing up to return to power in Punjab in the 2027 Assembly elections. He made the remarks while welcoming former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), where Channi arrived as chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture to lead a visiting delegation.
Warring said the party's top leadership, including Partap Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and other senior leaders, stands together and is committed to securing a Congress victory in the next state elections. He described Channi as a senior party leader and a respected former Chief Minister.
During the visit, Warring submitted a memorandum to Channi seeking a one-time special grant of ₹1,000 crore for research at PAU along with an annual grant of ₹50-60 crore. He said the university has been struggling financially and has, at times, faced difficulty paying salaries to its employees and scientists. He stressed that PAU played a historic role in India's Green Revolution and continues to contribute significantly to the country's food security.
Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over its claims of success in recent Municipal Council elections, Warring said ruling parties have traditionally performed well in local body polls over the past two decades but often failed to repeat that success in Assembly elections. He claimed that AAP's performance was weaker than that of previous ruling parties and said the opposition had fared comparatively better during the current regime.
The Congress leader also accused the Punjab government of failing to tackle key issues such as law and order, drug abuse, unemployment and the state's financial crisis. He alleged that corruption had become widespread under the AAP government and claimed that ordinary Punjabis were bearing the consequences.
Commenting on Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu's recent altercation with police personnel, Warring criticized the BJP leader and questioned his achievements as a Union minister. He asked what benefits Bittu had delivered to Punjab in terms of employment opportunities or railway infrastructure during his two-year tenure.
Responding to former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh's recent remarks praising Congress for its consultative approach, Warring said the veteran leader may have realized the democratic functioning of Congress after joining the BJP. He remarked that the BJP's environment was "suffocating" in comparison.
On criticism from Ludhiana's Shahi Imam regarding his absence from Eid prayers, Warring said the issue should not be politicized. He maintained that he regularly visits the mosque and meets the Imam but was occupied with other commitments on the day of Eid.
Several senior Congress leaders, including Jassi Khangura, Surinder Dawer, Kuldeep Singh Vaid, Pawan Dewan and Sanjay Talwar, accompanied Warring during the visit.
