Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has launched the ‘QR Treescape Initiative’, a digital tree mapping programme aimed at promoting environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation and interactive learning across its campus. The initiative was introduced on Monday under the university’s Clean and Green Drive and is being jointly implemented by the Estate Office, the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, and the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics.

Under the project, the university has installed more than 200 QR codes on important and heritage trees located at various points across the campus. Students, faculty members, visitors and nature enthusiasts can scan the codes using their mobile phones to access detailed scientific and educational information about the trees.

The digital profiles provide details such as botanical and common names, medicinal and ecological importance, flowering and fruiting patterns, along with other botanical information. The initiative includes several ornamental and indigenous species, including Lal Gulmohar, Neeli Gulmohar, Red Plumeria, Mango, Molsari and Amaltas.

University officials said the programme aims to transform the campus into an outdoor learning space where technology and nature work together. Besides enhancing the educational and aesthetic value of the campus, the initiative is expected to support research and academic activities related to plant sciences and environmental studies.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation-driven education. He stated that integrating digital tools with biodiversity conservation would help students and visitors develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of trees and the environment.

Dr. Gosal also emphasized that such initiatives contribute towards building environmentally conscious citizens and encouraging collective responsibility for a cleaner and healthier future. The university plans to expand the QR Treescape Initiative further by adding more trees and plant species in the coming months to create a comprehensive digital repository of the campus flora.
