The US Supreme Court has struck down former President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, ruling that the measures exceeded presidential authority and violated constitutional limits on taxation and trade powers.

In a 6–3 decision, the court held that Trump’s broad use of emergency economic powers to impose tariffs on multiple trading partners lacked clear congressional approval. The ruling marks a major legal setback for one of the most defining elements of Trump’s economic policy.

The case centered on Trump’s reliance on emergency statutes to justify tariffs designed to reduce trade deficits and protect domestic industries. The court concluded that tariffs function as a form of taxation, a power reserved primarily for Congress under the US Constitution.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, stated that emergency powers cannot substitute for explicit legislative authorization when implementing large-scale trade measures. The decision clarifies limits on unilateral executive action in trade policy.

The tariffs had targeted a wide range of imported goods from several countries, triggering global trade tensions and legal challenges from businesses and industry groups. Many companies argued that the duties increased costs and disrupted supply chains.

Legal experts say the ruling could open the door for businesses to seek refunds for billions of dollars collected under the blocked tariffs. The decision may also reshape how future administrations approach trade restrictions.

Three dissenting justices disagreed with the majority’s interpretation, warning that the ruling could restrict the president’s ability to respond swiftly to economic threats.

While the judgment invalidates Trump’s global tariff framework, sector-specific tariffs imposed under separate legal provisions remain unaffected.

The ruling stands as a significant precedent in defining the balance of power between Congress and the presidency in matters of international trade.
